Praying to the Kumari

I duck my head to pass through the small doorway, remove my shoes, and ascend to the second floor. After purifying my hands with the water provided, I am ushered into a dimly lit room. Soft light and a gentle breeze stream in through a small, carved wooden window. Beyond that light sits a small girl.
She is clad in a brilliant red garment adorned with intricate gold embroidery, wears layers of necklaces, and bears a magnificent crown upon her head. Her forehead is painted red in a distinctive pattern resembling a peacock spreading its plumage, outlined by a fine yellow line; at its center lies a “third eye" gazing back at me. She looks at me with a gaze that is both powerful and serene, as if seeing right through to my very core.
I kneel before her, bow my head, and offer a prayer with my forehead touching her sacred, red-painted feet. Her hand gently touches me. In that moment, I feel a mysterious sensation—as if I have connected with a vast presence dwelling within her.
A Kumari must be a young girl. In Tantra (Esoteric Buddhism), the goddess who serves as the consort of the male deity Shiva symbolizes Shakti—the primordial energy of the universe. Shakti is said to reside within the body of a young girl in its purest and most potent form. A young girl’s existence is closer to the divine than to the human realm. Upon reaching puberty, she transforms into an adult woman, becoming a being grounded in the realities of the human world. A young girl, however, remains untainted by the logic of human society; her being is akin to a void—an empty vessel—and thus she can serve as a dwelling place for the divine.
The Kumari is simultaneously a young girl (a virgin) and the wife of a male deity (an adult woman); she embodies both Durga—a warrior goddess who thirsts for blood—and a benevolent mother-goddess who abhors it. She is a being who encompasses these seemingly contradictory natures through a profound, all-embracing power. When praying to the Kumari, one can feel and touch—through her body—the energy that constitutes the root of the cosmos and the source of life.
